The School
WOSTEP was founded in 1966 by Ebauches SA and the Federation of Swiss Watch Manufacturers (FH) and is an institute for further education in watch making. The Swiss watch industry set up this school under the name of Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Program (WOSTEP) in order to train foreign watchmakers in after-sales service methods for Swiss watches. WOSTEP launched an ambitious program to foster and encourage the training of watch repairers and retailers worldwide.

The WOSTEP program is widely recognized as the industry’s best training and certification program. As one of only five WOSTEP Partnership training facilities in America, the Nicolas G. Hayek’s Watchmaking School’s mission is to develop and nurture the future generation of watchmakers in doing so, provide not only a resource for servicing fine quality Swiss watches, but also a lucrative career for its graduates.

The Nicolas G. Hayek Watchmaking is a tuition free program. Student will be required to pay for their tools; estimated cost is approximately $3,500.00. Housing and meals are the responsibility of the students; the school does not provide dormitory facilities.

Our curriculum has been developed in partnership with the Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Education Program (WOSTEP). It is divided into the following phases:

Micromechanics
In this first phase, students learn to use basic watchmaking tools for shaping metals. Emphasis is placed on topics related to micro-technology, including the metric system of measurement, tracing, sawing, precision filing, tool making and tool sharpening. Students will undertake projects combining the watchmakers’ lathe, heat treatment and polishing processes. Demonstrations are given, and students will have an opportunity to work on individual projects making watch parts and hand tools with the assistance of guided instruction. Students also gain an insight into the concept and physics of time, and the evolution of its measuring devices from a historical perspective.

Mechanical Watch
There will be two distinct phases which are focused on the mechanical watch. Students will become familiar with the many different complications available in watches: various self-winding and calendar systems, moon phase calibrations, mechanical and quartz watches. They will also acquire basic mechanical knowledge and learn disassembly and assembly sequences while improving their manual dexterity.

Advanced Mechanical and Electronic Watch
In this phase, students will acquire in-depth knowledge of various types of complications, chronographs and electronic watches and learn maintenance and casing procedures, including the proper fitting of all components.

Organization of after-sales service
Students will be prepared for the various opportunities available to the professional watchmaker. This part of the course will concentrate on how an efficient after-sales service organization can be set up and on how standard operating procedures can be implemented.

Preparation for the WOSTEP Certificate examination
The program concludes with intensive preparation for the WOSTEP Certificate examination.
